Self Medication

What is self medication?

The process by which appropriate patients can progress to independently dispensing their own medication. 

Who may benefit from self medication?

Any patient with the cognitive abilities to complete the process safely in preparation for discharge home.

How is this achieved?

Joint assessment by team including:

  • Knowledge of which medication / dose is required
  • Memory of when to take
  • Ability to open package and safely take medication
