Behavioural Management

What is behavioural management?

The use of varied strategies to promote a required behaviour and discourage undesired behaviour. For example positive reinforcement for an identified behaviour

Who may benefit from behavioural management?

It is typically used with people who demonstrate “inappropriate” behaviour. Inappropriate behaviour is defined as behaviour that, may put the person and /or others at risk e.g. physical aggression and prevents them accessing / using community facilities and activities e.g. dis-inhibited sexual behaviour.

Behaviour management is used with the following persons:

  • If they do not respond to the usual feedback that their behaviour is inappropriate

  • If they are able to consent, if not, the multi disciplinary team will make a decision in their best interest

  • If a behaviour assessment has been completed, identifying any patterns to their behaviour, and ruled out any other causes for inappropriate behaviour e.g. pain, poor communication skills, anxiety.  These causes would indicate that behaviour management is not suitable.

How is this achieved?

Effective behaviour management requires a consistent approach by all who have contact with the person, using the approach and strategies identified.

This is done in liaison with a cognitive behavioural therapist.
