What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment which can relieve symptoms of some physical and psychological conditions and may encourage the patient's body to heal and repair itself, if it is able to do so.
Who may benefit from acupuncture?
Acupuncture does much more than reduce pain, and has a beneficial effect on health. Patients often notice an improved sense of well-being after treatment.
Modern research shows that acupuncture can affect most of the body's systems including the nervous system which influences pain, muscle tone, Spasticity, sensation and muscle power.
How is this achieved?
Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects. We know that it increases the body's release of natural painkillers - endorphin and serotonin - in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received.
There are 2 forms of acupuncture commonly
used at Linden Lodge Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit, they are:
Conventional
Conventional acupuncture involves the use of pre-sterilised disposable needles of varying of various widths, lengths and materials that pierce the skin at the Acupuncture points.
Electro-acupuncture
Following the selection of acupuncture points, inserted needles can be coupled to the electrodes of an electro-acupuncture apparatus. These units are designed to deliver variable amplitudes and frequencies of electrical impulses.
The Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists has a strict code of practice. You are therefore assured of safe and effective treatment with a member of the AACP. (All Physiotherapists who practice acupuncture at Linden Lodge Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit are members of AACP).
