Nottingham Cancer Clinical Trials Team

The Nottingham Cancer Clinical Trials Team (NCCTT) was formed in April 2008 following the merger of the three former oncology research teams:

  • Mid Trent Cancer Research Network (Nottingham base)
  • Oncology Commercial Research Team
  • Radiotherapy Research

The NCCTT coordinates patient entry, treatment and follow up for both pharmaceutical and National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) trials. The NCCTT has a diverse portfolio of trials including:

  • Screening & prevention
  • Genetics
  • Treatment: for example
    • Chemotherapy
    • Radiotherapy
    • Surgery
    • Immunotherapy
    • Novel treatments

The majority of trials which are currently running are commercial trials run by pharmaceutical companies however a few are adopted by the National Cancer Research Network (NCRN), with some the gaining significant interest from the press. These trials offer the opportunity for patients to receive newly developed treatments not yet available on the NHS. One particular trial has its foundations close to home with the drug having been developed right here within the Nottingham University Hospitals.

Patients are introduced to a member of the research team following referral to one of the Consultant Oncologists, should they be considered potentially eligible for a currently running trial. Various trials may be available at any one time including genetic studies, lifestyle studies and clinical trials such as those involving chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy. The nature of Oncology research and the hard work of the team mean that new trials are constantly being opened within the department. Each member of the group aims to conduct the trials efficiently and effectively to the benefit of the patient and patients are supported throughout the trial from initial entry, for the duration of trial procedures and at follow-up.

The NCCTT is split into 4 groups, each coordinating different cancer sites:

The NCCTT has a Treatment Room where many of the drug treatments are administered by the team. The NCCTT also has close links with many departments across the Trust enabling investigations, treatments and care to be given to patients within those departments as part of clinical trials.

Locations

The NCCTT is based at City Campus, 1st floor, H-block.
