What is Compassionate Leave?
Compassionate leave enables managers to support their staff when they need to deal with urgent domestic problems by allowing extra (paid) leave over and above their normal annual leave entitlement.  Entitlement to Compassionate Leave is not dependent on length of service.

In what circumstances would Compassionate Leave be granted?
Compassionate leave may be granted for any of the following circumstances:

  • Bereavement in the cases relating to human death.
  • Other Urgent domestic distress where this cannot be dealt with under leave arrangements and where the situation requires immediate action on the part of the employee, e.g. victim of crime.
  • Where a close family member is taken gravely ill, or suffers a serious accident, that they may not survive.

How can I request Compassionate Leave?
You need to submit your request for Compassionate Leave to your Line Manager who will grant this if the circumstances are appropriate.

How much Compassionate Leave am I entitled to?
The usual time period given is up to 3 days (22.5 hours). In exceptional circumstances a period of 6 days paid leave (45 hours) in any 12 month period (pro rata for part time staff) will be granted.
