Membership update - 13,000 public members

NUH is pleased to announce that public membership of the Trust has passed the 13,000 milestone. We would like to thank all the members who have helped us to invite so many of their friends and family to have their say about their healthcare.

We are now pushing to reach our final target of 14,000 public members who will represent the community we serve and help to guide our vision to be the best acute teaching Trust in the country by 2016.

If you know someone who isn't a member of the Trust then why not invite them to join? This website has an online membership form, alternatively you can request a membership pack by calling 0800 731 0319.

FT application: update

In light of the various changes which accompany the White Paper ‘Equality and Excellence: Liberating the NHS’, the NUH Trust Board has confirmed that we will be submitting our application for Foundation Trust status in July 2011 to the Department of Health. Given the authorisation process, we believe that this would put NUH on a timetable to become authorised as a Foundation Trust early in 2012.

One of the headlines from the White Paper that was published earlier this year was the Government’s determination that all trusts will become - or become part of – a Foundation Trust by the end of April 2013/14, when strategic health authorities will be abolished. At this stage all trusts will be regulated by Monitor, which is the independent regulator set up to assess Foundation Trust applications and supervise their performance once approved as an FT.

We are completely committed to pursuing our Foundation Trust application. We now have almost 12,000 public members, many of whom have come along to the events we have organised throughout the year and many others regularly get involved and have their say on issues relating to NUH, which help to improve the experience of our patients.

We recently held a series of successful awareness sessions for members (staff and public) who have an interest in governor positions. Based on our proposed application date, governor elections are likely be held in the Autumn of 2011. We also have a schedule of ‘Medicine for Members’’ events for 2011 and these are listed on our website at www.nuh.nhs.uk/ft

We will continue to keep you updated as we progress our Foundation Trust application in 2011.

We have had a very successful Summer! Thank you to everyone that has signed up over the last few months.

The response from the public has been great and we are pleased to report that our public membership currently stands at 8,400 members. We are well on our way to reaching our target of 10,000 public members by Christmas 2009.

Since the start of the summer our recruitment team have attended 10 high profile public events including Nottingham Pride, Riverside Festival and the Summer Nottingham Polish Festival. Each event has helped to continue with the growth of our membership.

In September we reviewed our membership which identified under represented groups. One of these groups was 16-21 year olds. To address this the recruiting team have recently been visiting local colleges and universities to attract new members.

The Trust formally launched its public membership recruitment at its annual public meeting on 24 September 2008. Since then the Trust has appointed an external specialist company to help establish its membership register, develop suitable and reliable database information and assist with the recruitment of new members. During April 2009 we distributed 100,000 membership forms to named members of the public who had visited the Trust as patients within the last year.

The Trust is continuing to actively recruit members and to implement the membership strategy. We will be doing further work to identify those areas which are underrepresented. During summer 2009 the Trust will also be represented (through stalls, marquees etc) at a number of high profile events, festivals and the like in order to further raise awareness of the foundation trust and the benefits of membership. These include events with a particular cultural or interest group perspective, for example Nottingham Mela and Nottingham Pride.

Membership recruitment to date
The Trust’s membership currently stands at 5110 members and is continuing to grow. We want to say a big thank you to everyone that has signed up so far.
