Dialysis and Transplantation

Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for children with advanced kidney failure.  It is sometimes possible to have a transplant before dialysis is necessary.  If dialysis is necessary then we can choose between automated peritoneal dialysis at home or hospital haemodialysis.

There is a shortage of kidney donors worldwide and we increasingly favour the use of kidneys donated by a relative, usually a parent when a child is concerned.  We are very fortunate in Nottingham in having excellent transplant surgeons who can perform the donor kidney operation using keyhole surgery (also called laparoscopic surgery).

Obviously, each child is different and we will discuss with you on a number of occasions your child’s progress and treatment plan.  Remember that no worry is too small for us to talk about.  We will always aim to provide you with as much as information as your require.
