Physiotherapy Team

The team consists of four specialist physiotherapists.

Fiona Haynes

I trained at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge a long time ago! I worked in London before moving to Nottingham where I worked with the paediatric CF team. Then after four years in Edinburgh, I returned to Nottingham and worked for the paediatric and adult teams before moving to work solely with the adult team in 2000.

Areas of special interest within CF include Nebuliser therapy, exercise and complementary therapy.

I have three teenage children and enjoy swimming, cycling and yoga.

Sarah Millward

I qualified in 1997 (Leeds University) and have worked in the field of respiratory care since 2000. I have been part of the Nottingham CF team for two years. I am particularly interested in exercise prescription.

I am married with a two year old son

Geeta Singh

I have worked in healthcare since 1998 starting as a physiotherapy assistant. I qualified as a physio in 2002 and moved from London to Nottingham in 2005.

I have a particular interest in musculoskeletal problems and a great enthusiasm for acupuncture and complementary therapies. I have worked with both paediatric and adult CF teams and really enjoy my work.

I have two young children who I feel keep me young!

Tracey Hughes

I qualified from QE school of Physiotherapy at Birmingham University and worked in Birmingham, London and Australia before settling in Nottingham. I have worked with both Paediatric and Adult CF teams at City Campus and now work predominantly in the community for the Adult CF team.

My special interest within CF is hyperventilation or disordered breathing patterns.

I am married with three daughters and have a love of all sports, particularly riding and tennis

We work on in-patient wards, attend all the out-patient clinics as well as visiting patients at home if required.

Physiotherapy Treatment

Physiotherapy plays an important part in the respiratory management of CF and much, much more.

Our aim is to provide every patient with an individualised treatment programme to help them keep their lungs clear of secretions and so reduce the risk of infection and subsequent lung damage.

Following assessment, treatment is monitored and modified according to the individual’s requirements.

Airway clearance techniques include-:

  • Active cycle of breathing techniques (ACBT)
  • Autogenic drainage (AD) and modified AD
  • Positive pressure (PEP) devices
  • Oscillatory devices – acapella, flutter
  • High frequency chest wall oscillation  (the Vest)
  • Postural drainage (PD) and percussion

We are also involved in the provision and instruction on equipment such as nebulisers to enable patients to get the maximum benefit from their physiotherapy and nebuliser treatment.

Exercise

We can help to start exercise programmes to help you to achieve your physical goals – improving fitness, increasing flexibility, toning up and improving posture.

This can be followed up in the community by accessing exercise prescription programmes and helping to increase confidence to continue independently.

We now have our very own musculoskeletal physiotherapist who can assess and treat joint and muscle problems.

Other services

We offer a range of complementary therapies including aromatherapy, Indian head massage, remedial massage and coming soon acupuncture.

Relaxation techniques and stress management are also available.

Women’s health issues can also be addressed, with referral to specialist physiotherapists if required.
