Children’s cancer ward appeal gets a boost from radio station

The Nottingham Children's Hospital has received a personal donation of £25,000.

The donation, made by Tayla and Brett Dalby, has been given to Gem 106 as part of their 'Give it Up' appeal. The appeal, launched by the radio station at the beginning of November, aims to raise £25,000 for ward E38 - the children's cancer ward at Nottingham Children's Hospital.

Gem 106 have been asking their listeners to give something up for just one day, it could be a morning coffee or an afternoon snack, and instead donate that money to their appeal.

The Gem 106 appeal is part of a wider campaign, run by Nottingham Hospitals Charity, to improve facilities on the ward. The appeal aims to provide family focused, comfortable facilities which are welcoming and will allow families to maintain some normality in their lives, such as a dining kitchen and comfortable beds for parents to sleep on.

After only two weeks of the campaign Gem's target of £25,000 has already been doubled and currently stands at £52,000.

Angela Horsley, Head of the Nottingham Children's Hospital said: "We would like to thank to Gem 106 and their listeners for not only meeting the target, but exceeding it. This money will make a significant difference to our young patients and their families."

The Gem 106 appeal runs throughout November and even though the target has been smashed, the appeal will continue.

Mike Newman, Programme Director for Gem 106, said: "It was a great pleasure to launch the Gem 106 'Give it Up' appeal. The response from our listeners and local businesses has been amazing. Even though we've smashed our target we want to keep going and help put a smile on the faces of those children who need it most."

Gem 106 breakfast presenters Sam and Amy said: "We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our listeners. We can't believe that we've raised over £50,000 and there is still over a week to go. It is so easy for you to get involved, all we ask is that you give something up for just one day and donate to the appeal instead!"
