Pregnant women and their families need to decide whether they wish to have any of the screening tests that are available. It includes tests that are offered to pregnant women delivering at either Nottingham Maternity Unit. The private sector also offers various screening tests some of which are not available on the NHS. It does not include tests that are only used in special circumstances.
Some tests check the mother’s general health. Others are designed to check whether the baby is developing normally and whether the pregnancy is going well. Fortunately, most babies are healthy. Some mothers find it reassuring to have all the tests they are offered, whilst others feel that tests cause them more anxiety.

Before you have any tests or treatment, you have a right to be informed of the expected risks and benefits. This means that you can say ‘no’ to any test if you like. Staff must have your agreement before they can proceed. For most of the tests offered in pregnancy, it will be enough for you to say that you agree to go ahead. For some procedures, you will be asked to sign to say that you wish to have the test. You should be given more time to decide if you feel unsure about any test, unless it is an emergency.
Your midwife or doctor will be willing to talk to you if you have any questions
