

Parent Education workshops for both the City Hospital and QMC campuses are
based at the City Hospital campus. You are currently in the City

The Workshops are run by midwives or physiotherapists who specialise in women's health. All these workshops are open to women and their partners or birth supporters.
Booking forms for workshops should be completed once you have attended the Antenatal Clinic for your 20-week scan. These workshops are available at City Hospital Campus and the Community so you can choose which best suits your needs.
City Hospital campus offer:
Daytime (days may vary) 10 - 12 midday / 2 - 4pm
Weekday Evenings (days may vary) 7 - 9pm
Weekend Workshops: Saturdays am/pm or Sundays:
all in one day (three workshops)
The Physiotherapist also run the "Look after
yourself in pregnancy and after birth" workshop: Tuesday's 2 - 4pm
or Thursday's 10 -12md
In the community the workshops are held at varying
times and venues. Please speak to your community midwife for more
details.
Workshop 1: Active Birth - The emphasis on this workshop is on active
birth. Information is
given about how to recognise the signs of labour, going into
hospital, the stages of labour and coping strategies.
You will be shown how to adopt comfortable positions, try
some basic massage and relaxation techniques and how your birth
partner can be supportive.
Workshop 2: Pain Management and Alternative Births - Different methods of
pain relief are discussed such as using the birthing pool,
aromatherapy, TENS machines, "Gas and Air", pethidine, diamorphine
and epidurals.
Information is also given about induction of labour, assisted births
with vacuum or forceps and Caesarean section.
Workshop 3:
Infant Feeding and Early Parenting
- This workshop covers infant feeding, expressing and storage of
milk, positioning and attachment of baby at the breast and where to
get help and support for feeding your baby.
Early parenting is also discussed with information being
provided about baby care, car safety, reducing the risk of cot
death, emotional changes following childbirth, recovery and support.
This is a workshop for ladies only and is held only
at the hospital venues. An ideal time for attending this is between
24 - 34 weeks. A
women's health physiotherapist runs the workshop.
Advice is given about safe exercise in pregnancy, promotion
of continence, looking after your back and general aches of
pregnancy and returning to fitness after birth.
A one off special workshop for those expecting more
than one baby held approximately every six weeks at City Hospital
campus Included in
the workshop is information about multiple pregnancy, multiple
birth, feeding premature and/or small babies and support groups.
These are held in addition to the other workshops and are run
by a midwife with special interest in multiple pregnancies.
Every Thursday 2-4pm in the Parent Education department at the City Hospital Campus, we run a infant feeding drop in session/clinic focusing on providing information, friendship and support to antenatal and post natal women booked or delivered at either campus.
