The Bastow Lab is a Paediatric Gastrointestinal Clinical Investigations
unit; it provides an essential diagnostic service within the East
Midlands and surrounding counties, by performing diagnostic tests
investigating gastrointestinal health problems in children, in a
child friendly environment.
Children are referred directly to the Bastow Lab via their local hospital, Community Paediatrician or GP, or internally via one of the QMC consultants, for issues such as gastro oesophageal reflux, constipation, faecal incontinence, upper abdominal pains, digestion problems, or poor weight gain, among many other problems.
One of the challenges is carrying the diagnostic investigations to useful completion while keeping children comfortable, playful and relaxed. For this we have some of the latest, least invasive medical equipment as well as toys and other means to keep children busy during investigation.
A further key role of this Unit is in the development of research, teaching and training in these investigative facilities for health professionals in the UK and abroad. Our aim is to become a model unit for the whole of the country.
